Each year 30 million trees are cut down to print books in the United States alone. One way to reduce this growing number is to share books by visiting the Whole Earth Library! The typical library in the United States prevents 250 tons of greenhouse-gas emissions every year, because a library book has only a fraction of the economic and ecological cost of a book purchased from a store. The unique collection of sustainability-focused books and resources at the Whole Earth Library gives you the incredible opportunity to learn about the latest in environmental stewardship, while practicing it.
Membership in the library will enable you to check out items from the library collection. Membership is open to anyone who works for an organization in the Thoreau Center for Sustainability, or who works, lives, or studies in the Presidio of San Francisco. Other individuals are welcomed on a case by case basis. You can become a member by filling out a membership form and returning it to the library. Membership forms are available in the library or online: download form.
The items in the library's collection have been donated, and we rely on continued donations to keep the collection up-to-date. We gladly except donations of materials appropriate to the collection, and for a sense of the subjects we cover please read our classification chart. For a more specific sense of our interests, please consider a visit to our Powell's wish list. For other contributions, feel free to contact the library at library@thoreau.org.
